The next stage of the redevelopment of MacPherson Park is a step closer with Melton council appointing a contractor for the second oval redevelopment.
Local business McMahons Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract for the $2.45 million project which will include a new purpose-built, competition-standard sports ground with new turf table and all associated infrastructure, including new access road, car parking, sports ground lighting and other reserve landscaping.
The council has also outlined plans to employ local contractors to complete lighting, paths, carpark, and irrigation works.
The oval is set to be ready later this year, with the Melton cricket and football clubs set to use it.
The works will form part of the $6.5 million stage two redevelopment at MacPherson Park, which will also include construction of a new multipurpose soccer pavilion, and a third rectangle pitch for rugby and gridiron.
Stage two is funded by council, with the state government contributing $1.18 million contribution towards the soccer pavilion. Stage one, which included new facilities for the main sports oval, was completed last year.
Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said the project would benefit the wider community and local jobs.
“This is a really important project for our growing sporting community and it’s also become a wonderful opportunity to support local businesses and local jobs,” she said.
“I’m really pleased that the best contractor for the job is also a local contractor who is supporting local workers.
“As well as providing upgraded sporting infrastructure, this is will also connect residents and clubs socially, and is a way for council to continue to support local businesses.”
