Street works frustration

Ballan traders say fencing and noisy building work along the town’s main strip as part of streetscape upgrades is deterring customers.

Most of the paving works along Inglis Street are complete, with the installation of street furniture and some minor ancillary works still to come.

Asphalting has also been completed and roads are now open.

Business owner Rebecca Treadwell said the completion of the works couldn’t come soon enough.

“The noise is the biggest concern for us,” Ms Treadwell said.

“The fences are up and people don’t know that you’re open, or they can’t be bothered finding a carpark so they leave.”

Fellow trader Shane Zammit said he believed the upgrades, the first in more than 25 years, were necessary but were taking too long.

Moorabool council’s infrastructure general manager Phil Jeffrey said heavy rains stalled night works earlier on in the construction program.

“As part of the works, council is installing underground conduits that will future-proof the street for the potential undergrounding of electricity,” Mr Jeffrey said.

“Installation works of this nature may slow the progress of the works but will definitely provide a better long-term outcome.

“We are making every effort to expedite these works, which will enhance the visual appeal and functionality of the street and deliver a great outcome for the Ballan community.

“Council and its contractor will continue to work with traders and the community at large to minimise disruption and accommodate needs as much as possible.”
