EPA considers new noise laws

Changes to noise regulations may dictate how long and how late residents can use air-conditioners in summer.

The Environment Protection Authority wants residents to have their say on changes to residential noise regulations, which come up for consideration every 10 years, on a range of common household items including air-conditioners.

EPA executive director Dr Cathy Wilkinson said consultation with enforcing bodies, local councils and Victoria Police have already taken place and now it’s the public’s turn to give feedback before June 18.

“You can’t use an air-conditioner after 10pm if it can be heard from next door, but summers can be long and hot, and we are looking at extending that to 11pm,” Dr Wilkinson said.

“EPA is also considering allowing air-conditioners to run all night in regions where Victoria’s Chief Health Officer declares a Heat Health Alert, when prolonged hot weather poses a threat to the elderly, young children or Victorians with health issues.

“Now we are asking the public to tell us whether we are getting the balance right.”

The regulations cover lawnmowers, stereos and power tools, and the times of day when you can use them.

Residential regulations do not cover bars, pubs and industrial premises.
