Brooklyn dogs to have their park

By Goya Dmytryshchak

People are being invited to have their say on where Brooklyn’s first off-leash dog park should be located.

Hobsons Bay council has proposed two options for a park within Brooklyn Reserve – the corner of Cypress and Nolan avenues or the corner of Cypress and Heather avenues.

Mayor Sandra Wilson said the need for a dog park in the northern end of Hobsons Bay had come through loud and clear.

“We have plans to meet those expectations by June, 2018,” Cr Wilson said. “Now we want to hear from our community as to whether the dog area should be in the south-east or south-west corner of Brooklyn Reserve.”

The dog park is being established under the Brooklyn Neighbourhood Project, which has brought the community together through initiatives such as a pop-up dog park. Resident Richard Spiteri said he would like the new dog park to be next to the new $400,000 children’s playground in Nolan Avenue.

“I just think they’ve done all of the new work with the children’s playground, so for a family that has children and a pet … to me it makes more sense that a parent may want to take the kids out for a walk and a play and let the dog run off trail as well,” he said.

“I think it’s a bigger space as well for dogs to run around.”
