Ballarat FL: Panthers stumble in battle of the butchers

MELTON South couldn’t stop Dan Jordan seizing victory for East Point as two late goals broke Panther hearts by three points in Ballarat Football League at the weekend.

Jordan’s late salvo capped a bag of eight goals for the East Point spearhead in the 15.23 (113) to 16.14 (110) result at Melton Recreation Reserve.

Scores were locked at 89 points apiece at three-quarter-time and the lead changed seven times in the final term.

With 20 minutes played it was Melton South with the advantage.

Enter Jordan, the East Point playing coach, who finished the match off with strong hands and two late goals.

It could have been a bigger bag for Jordan, who missed a host of shots but finished with eight goals and seven points.

Matthew Bilton, Sam Kitchin and Jason Delaney were effective players for East Point, but the standout performance was Paul Koderenko in the ruck.

Marc Dransman was excellent for the Panthers, while Mathew Sutton finished with five goals. Melton South coach Shane Geddes was disappointed with his team’s inability to close out the match when it had the advantage.

“Three minutes to go and we were two points up. You should be able to hold on to a lead from there, but we didn’t.

“We had a really good start: five goals up at quarter time. You should be able to go on with it from there. We moved away from what worked early. They got back in the game in the second and it was nip and tuck from there on in.

“East Point was butchering the footy in front of goal; we were butchering it around the ground, and in the end I think we butchered it one too many times.

“Poor decision-making, in poor places with poor disposal and they got it back and hurt us. It’s one that got away.”
