Harvey, 10, has the right way on the fairway

Harvey Young isn’t your average golfer. Nor is he your average 10-year-old . . . the rising star has just won the D-grade championship at Melton Valley Golf Club, beating competitors many years his senior.

Playing off a handicap of 22, he was the only D-grader to break 100 in all four rounds of the championship.

Harvey has also qualified for the finals of the Victorian primary school championships in December.

“I’m really proud,” a beaming Harvey said. “I like golf. It’s fun.”

Mum Tricia said the family was proud of their little boy and realised his talent from an early age.

“[Playing golf] runs in the genes a bit,” Ms Young said. “Brad [Harvey’s dad] has been playing golf since he was 15 and my daughter used to play as well.”

Harvey was only seven when he took up golf at Melton Valley.

Club professional Mark Jackson said the club’s youngest player and champion had “blossomed into a very talented golfer”.

“Harvey is testament that if you work hard enough and receive encouragement and continually work at your game … the results will follow,” he said.

“I’m sure this is only the beginning of an exciting career for young Harvey Young.

“Remember the name . . . born and bred in Melton.”
