RDFL: Melton Centrals enter break on a winning high

After two wins on the trot, a week off may be the last thing the Melton Centrals need in the Riddell District Football League.

However, the Centrals (4-4) will also welcome the rest following two tough games that have helped them keep their season alive.

After defeating Lancefield last week, the Centrals were too strong for Kilmore on Saturday, winning 16.8 (104) to 13.7 (85) at JJ Clancy Reserve.

Centrals coach Brian Wheelahan said his players had spoken about trying to play more consistent football.

“Our year to date has been up and down and we’ve struggled to string together four-quarter performances,’’ he said.

“We’re not a good side if we switch off.’’

Wheelahan said while he was happy with the win, the final margin could have been a lot larger.

“I thought we controlled play for most parts of the game.

‘‘The way we used the ball was so much better than what it has been.”

Wheelahan said there were no real standouts, with all 22 players contributing.

As for the timing of the bye this week: “You could say that it is poor since we have won two matches in a row, but a lot of blokes have niggling injuries.

“If you ask the boys, they are asking for a break right now. We play [unbeaten] Romsey the week after, so we are under no illusions of what we have to do.’’
