CHBD: Bacchus Marsh into second after thrashing

Bacchus Marsh swept the rinks and climbed to second on the Central Highlands Bowls division 1 ladder with a surprise thrashing of Woodend on Saturday.

While the match shaped as a winnable one for Bacchus Marsh, the 18-110 to 0-77 scoreline has rearranged the top four.

Lancefield (146) is powering clear at the top, while the Marsh (127) is second from Kyneton Golf (120), with Woodend down to fourth (117).

Dylan Filuk’s 33-15 win against Ian Matthews was the biggest gain for Bacchus Marsh, while Justin Webster inflicted Matthew Bacon’s first loss of the season, winning 27-22 against the Woodend skip.

Alan Maher (23-20 against Toby Williams) and Amy Gloury (27-20 against Jim Lefevre) also claimed rink wins.

Around the division, Lancefield edged out Kyneton 15-88 to 3-86, Kyneton Golf won 12-94 to 6-88 against Gisborne, and Romsey comfortably defeated Trentham 18-118 to 0-60.

In division 2, Mt Cottrell climbed into the top four for the first time as its winning streak continued at the expense of Macedon.

Mt Cottrell won 14-99 to 4-76 to take fourth (86) from Diggers Rest (81), with Kyneton Golf sixth (79).

Diggers Rest lost 18-129 to 0-65 against Kyneton, while Bacchus Marsh seconds lost 14-91 to 4-82 against Woodend seconds.

In metro bowls, Melton shot from fifth to third with a 25-25 win against Essendon-2. The 17-95 to 1-69.75 win means Melton, even with a negative shot difference for the season, is third on the table with 108 points behind runaway top pair Lalor (154) and Fitzroy Victoria (131).

Hot on Melton’s heels are MCC (107) and Brighton (104) heading into Melton’s final pre-Christmas clash: this Saturday’s match against Melbourne-2 (eighth, 78).

In Ballarat District Bowls Division, Avenue remains eighth of 10 after its heavy defeat at the hands of Queenscliff.

The 16-102 to 2-67 loss leaves Avenue on
68 points, 63 adrift of the competition’s top four.
