Man drives car off bridge into Diggers Rest station powerlines

A man who drove his car off a bridge and onto the power lines of Diggers Rest train station has had a “lucky” escape, say emergency services.

Victoria Police and paramedics were called to Diggers Rest at 11.30pm on Thursday after a 34-year-old Barnadown man drove his car off the old Calder Highway and dropped over the side of the bridge, Ambulance Victoria spokesman Paul Bentley said.

He suffered only minor injuries to his neck and hip, and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

Marty Beveridge from Victoria Police said the cause of the collision is being investigated.

The incident affected trains running between Sunbury and Watergardens stations until about 7am. Buses replaced trains as crews worked to repair lines and restore power to the network.

Metro spokeswoman Larisa Tait said trains resumed running normally after 7.10am Friday, with residual delays of up to five minutes still expected.
