Driver killed as car flips
A man in his 50s died last Wednesday morning after his car flipped off the Western Freeway near Bungaree. An ambulance spokesman said the car had left the westbound lane and ended up on its side about 6.43am. The man was trapped in the vehicle and had been receiving treatment for serious injuries, but he died at the scene.
Health funding concerns
Moorabool mayor Pat Toohey has urged state and federal governments to work together to ensure Melton and Moorabool residents are not disadvantaged by recent changes to health funding arrangements. “It’s important state and federal governments find opportunities elsewhere in the budget rather than cutting funding to our health providers. The community has expectations of being well catered for.”
Drug-affected driver caught twice
A Brookfield man, 28, was caught driving while affected by drugs twice within three hours on January 19. Police said they pulled over a black BMW sedan on High Street, Melton, at 8.30pm. The driver returned a positive reading for methamphetamine. The same car was pulled over again on Station Street, Melton South, about 11.30pm. The driver returned another positive drug test.
Community consultation
Melton residents can meet mayor Kathy Majdlik and councillors at community consultation sessions. The two-hour sessions include a sausage sizzle and will start at noon at Eynesbury Reserve, February 10; Melton Civic Centre, March 17; Caroline Springs Civic Centre, March 24; and Morton Homestead on April 7. Firefighters beat the blaze
Firefighters have continued their fine work, with a Bacchus Marsh strike team attending a Creswick fire on January 22 and Little River grassfire on January 14. While the Creswick fire was controlled the previous day, the team — which included members from the Balliang, Coimadai, Myrniong, Parwan, Rowsley and Bacchus Marsh brigades — maintained containment lines in preparation for hot weather later in the week.
