North Western Titans suffered a frustrating end to the Baseball Victoria Summer League men’s division 3 season.

In a season which has been filled with missed opportunities, the Titans let slip the perfect chance to finish the season on a high.

Facing bottom side Ormond Glenhuntly Gold, the Titans lost 8-6 on Sunday.

Titans coach Danny Haymes said it was a disappointing way to end the season.

“We took a while to get going,” he said.

“We let ourselves down and then the tight calls went against us and hurt us bad.

“We nearly came back to win, but it wasn’t to be. We should have won.”

The Titans were decked out in pink as a fundraiser for breast cancer. Each year the side’s final game of the year is dedicated to a charity.

“Everyone wore pink and sprayed their hair pink,” Haymes said.

Haymes said there was at least three occasions this season, including this game, where they could have won but hadn’t been able to finish it off.

He said the side is struggling with knowing how to win and it was hurting them.

“We played really well against some of the top teams. We pushed the top team to nine innings, which most teams hadn’t been able to do.

“We were leading the bottom of the seventh against the third team and then lost.

“I think if we had some more personnel we would be able to finish off those games and get wins.”

Despite a somewhat frustrating season, Haymes said they had improved on their first year together and were continuing to develop.

The Titans finished the season in fifth with three wins.

Haymes said they were already working on next season and were talking to potential recruits.

He said the club would also have a winter league team for the first time, to keep the group playing together.

The season also came to an end for the Titans women’s side on Saturday.

Playing top side Wheelers Hill Warriors, the Titans pushed them all the way before falling short, 16-14.

It’s the first time the Titans have had a women’s side.

Haymes said the women’s side finished the season on a high note.

“It was a very pleasant game to watch,” Haymes said. “The girls have improved a lot and are a great group of girls.

“Most are already planning on coming back next year and some are planning to play in the winter competition. Everyone said they loved playing our team as they had some fun and it was always a good game.”
