It was a bad day at the office for the North Western Titans in Baseball Victoria’s Summer League division 3 competition on Sunday.
After showing encouraging signs this season, the Titans returned to some of last year’s inconsistent form against Ormond Glenhuntly-Blue on Sunday at MacPherson Park and lost 19-5.
Titans playing coach Danny Hymes said it was not a good day.
The Titans led early before Ormond Glenhuntly ran away with an easy win.
“It was the worst game we’ve had all year,” Hymes said.
“We were playing against a team that is second. We were in the game until the fourth innings and then went back to what we did last year.
“We had one bad innings and that killed us. They scored five or six runs in one innings and blew us away.
“It’s a day we want to forget.”
Hymes said the most frustrating issue was it was their mistakes that let Ormond Glenhuntly take control of the game.
He said they let themselves down and injuries hadn’t helped their cause.
He said Danny Taylor and Kyle Newman were the best in the loss.
Hymes said excluding last weekend’s match, they were happy with their progress.
The Titans sit fifth with one win from their first four games. He said they needed a bit of luck to turn more of those results into wins.
“We’ve been playing really well,” he said.
“We won last week and we’ve been in the other games and are feeling comfortable with where the standard is.
“We think we’ve caught up a bit compared to last season and I’m a lot more confident we can make finals.
“We’ve been more consistent.”
This week they face top side St Kilda. Hymes said they needed to get some hits and make the most of their opportunities if they are a chance against the Saints.
The women’s side remains without a win, but continues to show signs of improvement in division 3.
On Saturday they lost to Cheltenham Rustlers, 18-6. In round one, the scoreline between the two teams was 24-1.
Hymes said it was good to see the women’s side having fun.
“Within three weeks they’ve improved,” he said.
“There’s a lot of enjoyment and that’s the main aim for the first year, along with gaining experience.”
