Melton will need a good day with the bat if it is to beat Williamstown in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west.
With both sides looking to cement their spots in the top six, the match is important in the context of the season.
The Seagulls won the toss and elected to bat on their home pitch.
They lost one early wicket, before a second wicket partnership of 117 put the side back on track. Then at 2-172 the Seagulls looked headed for a massive score.
The Lions responded and started to pick up some late wickets. The closing overs saw the Lions take 8-66. Lions skipper Brad Jones was the pick of the bowlers, taking 6-33 off 16.1 overs.
The total of 238, though, will be a tricky one for the Lions, who are yet to make that many runs in a game this season. Only twice have they passed 200, including in their last round loss to Elsternwick.
Meanwhile the Lions, JC Craig Shield under-15 team finished the pool matches with two wins.
After winning their first match of the competition, the Lions needed to wait until round five to win again – this time against Hoppers Crossing. The Lions made 106 before bowling Hoppers Crossing out for 65.
Opening bowler Josh Oldfield took 4-6 to do the damage early on.
Oldfield was also the pick of the batsmen, top scoring with 20 before being run out.
Overall, the Lions finished sixth in the west pool, only above Hoppers Crossing.
