Diggers Rest made the most of getting on the court in the Riddell District Netball League.
After a false start in round one, with their match against Romsey postponed due to a power blackout, the Burras were itching to get out and play a game.
They gave a strong first impression against Broadford, winning 70-21.
Burras coach Pam Strong said it was good to finally get out and have a run.
She said the late postponement of the round one game had unsettled them, but they had responded well at training and refocused.
“It’s the first time playing together for the girls,” she said.
“One of Broadford girls went down injured with a knee injury and we had to push through. It was really good to get everyone a run and they all contributed.”
Kathie Dicker starred in the shooting circle with 55 goals from 68 attempts.
She formed a good partnership with Shelby Strong who shot 15 goals.
Pam Strong said while Dicker was new to the side, the two shooters had played together before.
“They were great,” she said.
“Kathie has been part of state teams but hasn’t played for a few years.
“I’ve known her for years and gave her a call and she was free.
“She’s experienced and slotted in really well.”
Anica Scherer, who has come across from Lancefield, was named best on court. Scherer and the other defenders made the most of the absence of star Kangaroos shooter Amelia Brock.
Carly Harrison and Olivia Thomas were the other additions to the Burras team during the off season.
Strong, in her first year of coaching the Burras, said she thought they were stronger than the team that went out in the first week of finals last year.
“I think they are combining well and everyone is versatile and plays more than one position. The four we have brought in are 21 and under so we have a really young team.
“Across the board we are a lot stronger.
“We will have some challenges with girls going away. Finals are definitely the aim and I’d be disappointed if we don’t make it.”
Melton Centrals opened their account with a solid win against Woodend-Hesket on Saturday night.
Centrals led at every break, winning three of the four quarters on the way to the 55-42 win.
Rebecca Morabito continued her good start to the season, named best on court for Centrals with 30 goals from 36 attempts.
Rockbank proved no match for Macedon, with the Cats winning 68-32.
