Diggers Rest Bulla turns pink

There will be a touch of pink for Diggers Rest Bulla Cricket Club this weekend as the club hosts Sunbury in a Gisborne and District Cricket Association T20 double-header.

The club will host a Pink Stumps Day, along with the club’s first ever ladies day.

Burras all-rounder Kevin Barker said while they had hosted Pink Stumps Days before, they wanted to go a step further this year.

“The awareness of Pink Stumps is a massive thing,” he said.

“It’s a great cause and we want to get behind it.

“This year we wanted to take it a step further and wanted to celebrate the ladies in the game.

“We wanted to pay tribute to the wives, girlfriends, sisters and mothers.

“We want to go from strength to strength each year with this event.”

The ladies day event will be a high tea that includes live music, raffles and stall tables, with all profits going to Breast Cancer Network Australia.

It won’t be just the women getting dressed up in pink to support the day, with the cricketers also donning pink uniforms.

Barker said it would be interesting to see a few players in pink that wouldn’t usually ever be caught in that colour.

He said their sponsors had got involved with helping with the new uniforms and there had been a lot of support from the community and their opponents for the day, Sunbury.

“In the T20 competition you’re allowed to wear coloured uniforms,” Barker said.

“We’ve designed a pink uniform and we will wear it in all T20s going forward.

“If we continue to play the T20s for points [like this season] we will make our home T20 match Pink Stumps and Ladies Day every year.”

The cricket action will start from 1pm on Saturday with the McIntyre Cup Premier seconds followed by the Premier Firsts at 4pm.

The ladies day function will start at 1pm.
