Aintree continues to grow in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association and surrounding competition.

One of the newer clubs in the region, the club’s senior and junior programs have further expanded this season as the club continues to develop.

Aintree secretary Ankur Harkut said things were looking strong across the club this season.

“The season has been good,” he said. “We have seven senior sides and about seven junior teams across different associations and grades.

“Our top side is in the GDCA [Johnstone Shield] and we’re looking to make finals.

“We’re really happy with that team, it’s the best team we’ve had representing the club in the top grade.”

On Saturday, Aintree got a win against another side chasing a finals berth, beating Kyneton.

Having made 223 on day one of the match, Aintree bowled Kyneton out for 163 on Saturday.

The win has Aintree in second spot with one round left before the Christmas break. Aintree faces Gisborne in a one-dayer this Saturday.

Harkut said after the delayed start to the season due to the weather, they were still getting their feet across the grades and competitions.

“We’re going well so far, but we’re still setting up and trying to find the balance in all the teams,” he said.

“Everyone is working hard.”

One of the highlights for Aintree this season has been the club fielding a women’s side for the first time.

Harkut said it was an exciting time for the club.

“We’ve worked hard to bring the team together,” he said. “We’re trying to help them with coaching outside of training.

“We want them to learn quickly to play and have an environment of learning. We’re playing some juniors.

“We tried to have some girls teams, but couldn’t get the numbers, hopefully we’ll have a look again next year.”
