VSDCA: Tail wags for shaky Melton

The top order wobbled, but Melton’s lower order compiled a competitive total for the pace attack to defend against Yarraville in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association this weekend.

The Lions made 8-224 from 80 overs on the opening day of east-west first XI at Yarraville Oval.

The top order struggled to 5-68 before Jeremy Liddy (42) and Nathan Allen (84no) steadied with an 82-run partnership for the sixth wicket.

Allen then batted with the tail to ensure Melton batted out its 80 overs.

The responsibility falls on Brad Jones, James Wheelahan and Paul Halfhide to defend the score this weekend.

In Ballarat Cricket Association, Darley faces a tough chase after visiting Brown Hill made 7-267 at Darley Park.

A century stand to open the day put Brown Hill in the box seat, before Hayden Jamieson took 4-44, including the prize wicket of Hill’s top scorer Jack James (92).

Former Melton quick Shane Harwood will be in Brown Hill’s attack as the visitors defend their score this weekend.

In Williamstown District Cricket Association, A and B turf was cancelled at the weekend after Hobsons Bay Council withdrew its grounds from use.

That Melton South (at Williamstown Imperials) and Melton Centrals (home against St Johns) will start with one-day games this Saturday from noon.

In Western Suburbs United Churches Cricket Association, Eynesbury made a winning start to life in the top division.

The Eagles (6-118) beat Altona Sports (115 all-out) in A-grade synthetic.

Chris Lunn (5-25) was Eynesbury’s star with the ball, while Daniel Tennant (31) top scored. Division rival Rockbank made 3-69 off 10 overs to chase down AA Maidstone (64 all out).
