RDFL: Romsey streak continues after thriller

ROMSEY remains undefeated and on top of the Riddell District Football League ladder after a thrilling seven-point win over Rupertswood on Saturday.

In what proved to be match-of-the-round, Rupertswood led at every change and nearly caused one of the upsets of the season before Romsey rallied late.

In a terrific game at Salesian College, one that ebbed and flow, neither side was able to shake off the other. Leigh Brennan, who sat out the inter-league game last weekend, got his third consecutive five-goal haul to be one of the stars for Rupo, while Cameron Dawson backed up his good form in the inter-league match with five goals.

Rupo kicked five in the opening term to lead by seven points at the first change, before the Redbacks got within two at the main break. The third quarter saw Rupo edging ahead to lead one of the flag favourites by five points at three-quarter time.

But Romsey was the better team when it mattered, and but for inaccuracy keeping Rupo in it until late – the Redbacks kicked 3.7 for the term – would have closed it out earlier.

Rockbank broke through for the win it has been threatening for weeks, belting Broadford by  86 points.

Coach Leigh Sporle kicked five for the Rams, who were thoroughly dominant after quarter-time, kicking 16 goals to the Kangaroos’ four.

Lancefield gave Sunbury a mighty scare in the first half, restricting the Kangaroos to just two goals as it opened up a 22-point lead. But the Tigers managed just two more goals for the day as Sunbury slammed home nine for a 24-point win.

Woodend-Hesket remains winless after a 62-point loss to Wallan, as does Kilmore, which lost to Riddell by 38.

Scores: Diggers Rest 21.8 (134) d Melton Centrals 4.6 (30), Rupertswood 14.9 (93) d Romsey 15.10 (100), Lancefield 7.11 (53) lt Sunbury 11.11 (77), Kilmore 6.8 (44) lt Riddell 10.18 (78), Rockbank 19.12 (126) d Broadford 6.4 (40), Woodend-Hesket 7.10 (52) d Wallan 17.12 (114).
