RDFL: Melton Centrals go down fighting

LANCEFIELD stunned Melton Centrals to hand the Blues back-to-back losses in Riddell District Football League on Saturday.

It was the Tigers’ third win of the season and came courtesy of a rampaging second quarter.

Lancefield trailed Melton by 29 points at quarter-time but booted nine to two in the second to lead, remarkably, by 15 at half-time.

Scores were level at the final break in a highly entertaining game of footy and the Tigers kicked three to one in the last to score a confidence-boosting victory.

Matt Davidson shot up the goalkicking leaderboard with nine majors as Romsey belted Woodend-Hesket on Saturday.

The hapless Hawks could manage only four goals as the Redbacks remained undefeated with a 120-point win.

Davidson comfortably beat them off his own boot in a dominant display up forward. He has 23 goals for the year, three behind Melton Centrals’ Adam Fenton.

Romsey had the game won by the time the quarter-time siren sounded. They had 13 scoring shots to one for the quarter and led by 42 points at the first break. It wouldn’t be until the last quarter they got a triple-figure lead, but Romsey was rarely troubled. Mitch Farmer also booted three goals, while Chris Petroro continued his good form.

Sunbury easily accounted for Broadford at Eric Broadman Reserve, running out 99-point winners in the battle of the Kangaroos.

Sunbury kept Broadford goalless in the opening term as they kicked five goals, and from there Broadford was never in the game. Sunbury ruckman Leigh Fishenden was again brilliant in his third game back.

Diggers Rest travelled to Wallan and returned with a 45-point win. In yet another wind-affected match, the Magpies were cursing inaccuracy in the first quarter, managing only 1.6 as Diggers Rest took a one-point lead at the first break. By half-time they were trailing by 39 points and never recovered, the Burras kicking away in the last quarter.

Macedon picked up its third win for the year at Kilmore, 66-point victors over the Blues. The Cats broke the game open with a six-goal second quarter after an even opening term and were rarely troubled thereafter.
