Calls for Youth Week funding to be reinstated have been supported by a Moorabool councillor.

East Moorabool ward’s Tonia Dudzik raised the issue on behalf of the Moorabool Shire Youth Action Group as a matter of urgent business at last week’s council meeting.

Federal funding for youth engagement during Youth Week was slashed in this year’s budget by 80 per cent until 2017, when it will be removed entirely.

Moorabool Shire Youth Action Group took to social media last month to express its disappointment.

“We’re infuriated with this turn of events, especially after running multiple successful events for last year’s Youth Week,” the group’s Facebook post said.

“On behalf of the young people of Moorabool and the rest of the country, we have written to local federal member Catherine King, bringing this issue to her attention and asking for her support.”

Cr Dudzik said Youth Week allowed young people to express their creativity and have their say about issues important to them.

Applications opened last week for the state and federal governments’ jointly funded $187,000 National Youth Week 2016 grants scheme. Applications close on November 13.
