Wreckers ablaze in Melton

About 40 firefighters battled to control a blaze at a wrecking yard on Collins Road, Melton on Wednesday.

Emergency services arrived to find a large factory shed, which housed multiple vehicles and parts, well alight.

Crews in breathing apparatuses worked quickly with hose lines to attack the fire both externally and internally, with multiple vehicle tyres proving difficult to extinguish.

The fire was deemed under control by 11.39am but not before the building received extensive damage to over 70 per cent of the structure.

Occupants of the property and neighbouring businesses all evacuated safely.

The Environmental Protection Authority, police and Melton council attended the scene. FRV said the fire was started accidentally from some work being undertaken within the building.

The EPA has confirmed officers were on scene with its main concern being fire water run-off was contained to keep it out of storm water drains and possibly local creeks.

The EPA is investigating.
