Victoria is on track to reduce its carbon emissions by 50 per cent by 2030, the state state government announced.
Energy minister Lily D’Ambrosio released the Victorian Greenhouse Gas Emissions Report 2020 on Tuesday September 20.
According to the report, the state’s carbon emissions fell almost 30 per cent below levels observed in 2005, nearly double the government target.
“Our nation-leading investment in renewable energy has helped us smash our 2020 emissions target – and we’re well on the way to reducing emissions by 50 per cent by 2030,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.
Emissions across Victoria dropped almost 6 per cent between 2019 and 2020 with the largest drops identified within the electricity sector that observed an emissions reduction of 2.2 million tonnes, and transport related emissions were reduced by 1.9 million tonnes.
“It’s only the Labor Government that has a track record of delivering on climate change – slashing emissions while driving down the cost of living for Victorian families,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.
In the 2021-22 financial year 34 per cent of Victoria’s energy came from renewables.
