Victoria police have confirmed a driver and two passengers are in hospital with life threatening injuries after a serious collision that occurred overnight in Caroline Springs.

It’s believed a vehicle travelling on the wrong side of the road collided head on with a truck in the inbound lanes of the Western Freeway at about 2am.

The driver of the truck was also taken to hospital but with non-life threatening injuries.

Police and emergency services are currently at the scene where lanes are closed city bound at Hopkins Road causing significant delays with queues stretching more than 10 kilometres back into Melton.

A statement from Transport Victoria said the best alternative route is the Melton highway which is carrying more traffic than normal, increasing journey times.

Police have been present at the closure at Hopkins Road, redirecting traffic to use Boundary Road and return to either the Deer Park Bypass or M80 Ring Road.

The Western Freeway will re-open once investigations are complete and it is safe to do so.
