In a thrilling display of skill and teamwork, the young athletes of Southern Cross Grammar’s primary school have emerged victorious at the Victorian Volleyball State Championships.
The talented squad, composed of determined year 6 students, showcased exceptional sportsmanship and dedication throughout the competition.
The students’ coach, Dean Galea said the school community is beaming with pride at the team’s achievements with plans to celebrate the squad with a guard of honour at the upcoming school assembly.
Their secret to success? Tireless hours of practice during lunch time, PE class and after school, where they stayed committed to getting better each week.
“It was a really tough competition, which started off in local divisions, then district league and then the regional state competition before finally heading to the state championships,” Galea said.
“At one stage the girls had won 18 games in a row from the first bit of play, they were so committed and each put in an incredible amount of training.”
Galea said most of the girls had not played competitive volleyball before but are now keen on pursuing it after their dream run at the state championships.
“The state finals really felt like grand final day, they started off a little nervous but kicked into gear,” he said.
“At the end of the state finals once they did win … they all broke down in tears and it got me a little emotional. They had a game plan and knew what they were doing, their hard work really paid off.”
