State splashes funds for public safety

Tightening up security measures around open public spaces will be easier across the west thanks to the state government’s latest funding boost.

Councils and community groups working on new crime prevention projects can apply for grants of up to $250,000 under the Public Safety Infrastructure Fund.

Projects eligible for funding include lighting upgrades, streetscape and other amenity improvements, or the installation of CCTV technology in high risk areas.

Western Victoria MP Jaala Pulford said that the $4 million pool would fund security infrastructure that supported safer communities.

“Local communities here in western Victoria are best placed to identify local crime issues and come up with local solutions that will make a real difference,” Ms Pulford said.

“Whether it’s lighting, new locks, CCTV or a bigger scale project, I encourage local councils and community groups to think about how this funding could make a difference in their area.

“These types of projects can help prevent crime and encourage more people to get the most out of our fantastic public spaces.”

Ms Pulford said the latest round  of Community Safety Fund grants  is also offering grants of up to $10,000 for projects that help prevent crime and strengthen community safety.
