Cobras give needy kids the boots

Families with old footy boots mounting up in their garage or shed are being urged to donate them to Bacchus Marsh Junior Football Netball Club for disadvantaged kids to use.

The initiative, set up by Darren Smith in his new role of junior club president, aims to provide boots for families with growing kids who want to play sport but struggle to pay for expensive sports gear.

Mr Smith said donated boots would be cleaned and sold for $10, with the money going towards continued sponsorship of children in the Auskick and Net Set Go programs.

“Last year we offered to pay for two kids, a boy and a girl, to take part in the Auskick program,” Mr Smith said. “We wanted to help kids who came from families that were doing it tough and couldn’t afford to attend programs like that.”

The club had already collected 25 pairs of boots but needed more, Mr Smith said.

“We have many families in Bacchus Marsh doing it a bit tough,” he said. “Their kids miss out on taking part in organised and structured sport.

“We know sport has a positive influence on a child’s personal, social, educational and community development … it helps them to feel like they belong.”

To donate, contact the club through the Bacchus Marsh Football Netball Club Facebook page.
