Darley Neighbourhood House (DNH) is tackling period poverty as part of the Share the Dignity Campaign, and it has already made a huge impact.
Share the Dignity is a women’s charity operating across Australia, working to make a difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence, or doing it tough.
The Dignity Drive calls on members from the community to donate unopened packs of pads, tampons, menstrual cups, period undies, reusable pads and incontinence aids at collection points set up across Australia, and DNH’s collection point has already felt the impacts of the local community’s huge generosity.
“We’ve got this big box that is already absolutely overflowing,” community engagement officer Laura Laver said.
“I think a lot of people are keen to support us. We’re already looking at getting a bigger box for our collection point because of the huge support.”
Ms Laver said the generosity of the community has been nothing short of amazing.
“One woman came in yesterday and donated something like 20 products, and that’s just amazing,” she said.
But the fight against period poverty cuts deeper for DNH, as Ms Laver said no woman should have to deal with period poverty.
“It’s such an important thing that everyone should have access to,” she said.
“Every person has a woman in their lives – sisters, daughters, mums that will experience periods. It’s not a choice so we need to give dignity to those people who experience this.”
With every period product donated, participants receive a raffle ticket with the chance to win from a massive pool of prizes, set to be drawn at DNH’s International Women’s Day morning tea on Thursday 5 March.
