A trip to Melton Waves when the mercury rises is a long-held tradition for local folk.
Now the iconic Melton pool has been recognised as one of the most well-inspected, safest and least costly pools of all those run by interface councils, a new report has found.
The recently launched Know Your Council website compares the performance of local government to the state average, and to similar councils.
The Melton Waves leisure centre was inspected 11 times in the past financial year, compared with three inspections of Wyndham and Whittlesea pools, and two at Hume.
Each person’s visit to a leisure facility in the municipality costs Melton council 82 cents, compared with $8.51 to Whittlesea council and $3.60 to Hume council.
Melton Waves manager Gareth Dowell said he was pleased to see the “iconic” centre performing well, compared to similar centres.
Mr Dowell said they were able to keep their costs low to council and visitors because of initiatives including free membership to people 70 and older.
Melton Waves is inspected on a regular basis to maintain public confidence, Mr Dowell said.
“Council has a regular regime of testing pool water quality, conducting facility audits, and we also have our own internal inspections,” he said. “Council does thorough routine inspections to ensure we’re complying with standards.”
Recreation and youth manager Adrian Burns said the council worked closely with Melton Waves to promote the centre.
“Council does operate with the contractor [Belgravia Leisure] to deliver a number of community wellbeing programs,” Mr Burns said.
