Melton council seeks funding boost for community projects

Six roads and community infrastructure projects in Melton have been selected to receive a funding boost through a third round of grants from the federal government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program.

In May 2020, the federal government announced the $500 million LRCI program, which was then extended in the 2020-21 budget to include a further $1 billion in funding.

The objective of the LRCI program is to generate additional infrastructure in local communities across the country, and to support them in managing the economic impacts of the pandemic.

At a council meeting on December 13, council voted to nominate the six projects to the Department of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development for funding.

An amount of $2,521,836 has been allocated to the projects if approved by the department, with an additional $458,164 contributed through council.

The selected projects include upgrades at Melton Recreation Reserve, such as renewal of the netball courts and car park, as well as pedestrian connections and landscaping.

A total of $1.1 million has been allocated to these projects at the reserve.

A park upgrade at Cobblestone Green Recreation Reserve could also be in the works, totalling $600,000.

The other three projects are a street light improvement project for the city, public lighting upgrade at Navan Park and public toilet upgrade in Toolern Vale.
