Jack is king of his trade

Jack Briscoe is in his element tinkering in a garage – whether it be with a motorbike or a mower.

The Bacchus Marsh mower mechanic was recently named Apprentice of the Year in the outdoor division at Kangan Institute’s apprentice and industry awards.

“It was very surprising when I won the award,” he said. “I’m really proud of myself – it means I’m a really good mechanic and good at what I do.”

He’s in his final year of a four-year apprenticeship, servicing outdoor tools and equipment.

“I’ve been fixing lawn mowers and outdoor tools since I was about five,” the 20-year-old said. “My dad loved to show me a few things here and there and I just really liked fixing things.”

Bacchus Marsh Mowers co-owner Sarah McDonald said Jack was talented beyond his years.

“We’re extremely proud of him,”
Ms McDonald said. “We all knew he was a star and this award confirms it. He’s really kind and helpful and brilliant at his job.

“He’s pretty handy and there’s probably more to learn this year, but he’s very advanced.”

Jack said he wanted to carry on in the field after he completes his apprenticeship.
