Island time in Melton

The west’s rugby women will celebrate their sport in style at an island night this weekend.

Rugby union players and supporters of all stripes are invited to the Western Districts Wildcats’ annual fundraiser at McPherson Park in Melton, especially if they’re frocked up in Polynesian finery.

The women’s rugby union team, which is affiliated with the Brimbank Bucks Junior Rugby Club, Footscray Bulldogs and the Melton Warriors, is in its fifth season and includes players from around the state.

Coach Aturo Kamuta says that Saturday’s event aims to boost support for women’s rugby union and raise the profile of the game in the west.

“This is my first time coaching senior women’s rugby having worked with Brimbank and Victoria secondary colleges youth girls teams last year,” Kamuta says.

“To provide a pathway for women’s rugby, I believe we need to introduce women’s rugby into schools at college level and maintain it to keep them interested as they leave school.

“At Western Districts, the players are keen, and they want to learn. The thing that’s surprised me the most is their commitment.”

The Island night fundraiser starts at 7pm at the Melton Warriors Rugby Union Club on Saturday. Entry costs $10.
