Support for couple on tough road

Bacchus Marsh is throwing its support behind a couple dealt two cruel blows in the past year.

Robyn Johnson was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer in March 16 last year then endured three operations and 23 weeks of chemotherapy at Ballarat Hospital.

During that time she was also diagnosed with a heart condition that requires ongoing medication and treatment.

Heartbreak struck again when Robyn’s husband, Ian, was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukaemia in March, exactly a year since Robyn’s diagnosis.

Ian is undergoing daily chemotherapy as an outpatient at the Olivia Newton John Cancer Centre in Heidelberg.

An online GoFundme campaign, set up by family friend Erin McNamara, has raised nearly $2000 in its first week to assist with the family’s travel expenses.

Ms McNamara says the Bacchus Marsh community is rallying around the Johnsons, who are “doing it tough”.

“Travelling from Bacchus Marsh to Heidelberg was difficult, so visitation is limited,” she said.

“Ian is currently resting at home before going back for a second round of daily chemotherapy.

“He has been out of work for the past six years due to other medical issues, and being a one-wage household, finances are now pushed to the limits.

“Both Robyn and Ian need numerous ongoing medications, specialist appointments and they have constant travelling expenses.”

Robyn posts regular updates on her Facebook page for friends, family and supporters.

“I would like to thank the amazing people of Bacchus Marsh for supporting myself and Ian,” Robyn wrote.
