Melton police and high school students battled it out in an epic basketball tournament last Thursday.

Years 7 to 10 students from Kurunjang, Brookside, Catholic Regional, Staughton, Melton Christian and Melton Secondary colleges competed against each other and Melton police officers.

Brookside College emerged as the day’s champion in an “extremely closely fought” grand final against Catholic Regional College Melton.

Leading Senior Constable Jo Mutsaerts said the tournament was about bringing together students and police in a fun and relaxed setting.

“It enables police and students to interact in a casual, unofficial sense,” Leading Senior Constable Mutsaerts said.

“The tournament took police away from their everyday tasks responding to crime and attending to inquiries, and allowed us to give back to the kids and the community in a positive sense.”

The tournament is expected to be held annually.
