Father Bob Maguire visits Melton club

The Melton Probus Club had a special guest speaker at their July meeting this week, as Father Bob Maguire visited Melton.

The 87-year-old well-known former priest and media personality addressed a small crowd that gathered at the Melton Darts and Bingo Club on the morning of July 5.

Father Bob entertained the audience for almost an hour with anecdotes, famous quotes from Karl Marx, Winston Churchill and Star Trek, as well as breaking into snippets of songs, such as Let It Be by The Beatles and My Way by Frank Sinatra.

Speaking to the Probus Club, made up of local retirees, he addressed themes of community, unity and respect for elders.

Memorable words from Father Bob throughout the morning were: “You’re only as old as you feel,” and “everyone is beautiful in their own way.”.

Melton Probus Club president presented Father Bob with a certificate of appreciation at the conclusion of his talk.

The club, formerly known as Melton Men’s Probus Club, has recently registered with Probus South Pacific to become a combined group that will have both men and women as members and hope to welcome women into the club from now on.

They are currently welcoming new member and looking forward to expanding club activities with the start of the new combined club.

Melton Probus Club have monthly meetings on the morning of the first Tuesday of each month and club lunches or dinners at local businesses on the third Tuesday of each month.
