Cactus chat at botanic gathering

Garden lovers and curious beginners alike are invited to the Friends of the Melton Botanic Garden’s (FMBG) monthly meeting on Wednesday 11 March.

The free event is set to feature guest speaker Sue Parker, president of the Ballarat Cactus and Succulent Society, who will present on the fascinating world of cacti and succulents.

Ms Parker will share her expertise on the care and cultivation of these hardy, drought-tolerant plants, which are known for their striking forms and, in many cases, spectacular flowers.

From large outdoor varieties to smaller plants perfect for hanging baskets or dish gardens, the session promises something for seasoned enthusiasts and those just starting out.

The Ballarat Cactus and Succulent Society promotes interest in the unique plants through community events, workshops and shows, fostering a supportive network of growers across the region.

Attendees will also receive updates on what’s happening at the Melton Botanic Garden and upcoming Friends activities. Many varieties of cactus and succulents can already be seen throughout the garden.

The meeting will be held at the Botanica Springs Community Centre, 249 Clarkes Road, Brookfield, from 7.30pm.

Everyone is welcome, with supper provided, and guests are encouraged to bring their own cup or mug. A raffle will also be held on the night, with tickets available for $1 each (cash only).

For catering purposes, attendees are asked to RSVP by emailing friends@fmbg.org.au or calling John Bentley on 9743 3819 and leaving a message if unattended.

For more information, visit fmbg.org.au or follow the Friends on social media.
