Members of the western suburbs Albanian community are awaiting answers from the state government on plans to compulsorily acquire land bought more than 25 years ago for a community centre.
The parcel of land, at 1352-1402 Western Highway in Rockbank, was purchased in 1989 by the Albanian Australian Community Association to build a cultural hub.
But nothing has been built on the land since, with the Victorian Planning Authority and Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning exploring acquisition of the land for a regional park.
The state government and Melton council are working with surrounding landowners to decide the final boundary of the proposed Kororoit Regional Park, which is likely to be between Clarke and Sinclairs roads.
Melton council decided at its April meeting to write to the planning department to ask that it define the boundaries of the planned regional park to provide some “certainty in respect of the future use of the land”.
Albanian association secretary Adzi Ceni said that the community had been left in limbo waiting for answers.
“We want to have a determination as to what’s going to happen with the land,” Mr Ceni said. “It gives us an idea of where we’re headed.”
