IN FOCUS: On the road with Jayco Ballarat

As a caravanner of many years, Scott McPherson knows a thing or two about the favourite way Australians love to see their vast country. He started out in farming and ran a business, then – about 10 years ago – he and his partners decided the caravan industry was for them so they took up ownership of Jayco Ballarat.

Established 40 years ago, Jayco Ballarat is now regional Victoria’s largest caravan dealer. Spread out on about 2.4 hectares, the dealership has 80 new and used caravans on site and employs 13 service and 11 retail-office staff.

Scott says getting through the global financial crisis was a challenge that required hard work and persistence to survive.

“It was worth the effort because the industry – and the lifestyle that comes with it – makes it a pleasure to be part of the Jayco family,” he says.

“Sharing this experience with our clients and then hearing about their travels and/or dreams is an absolute highlight.

“Whether it is a young family taking a ‘gap’ year and sharing what they have planned, or a seasoned traveller heading to far north-west WA for the 10th time, it’s always exciting to hear where people are going or have been.

“Being involved with Jayco is another constant highlight.

“Working in partnership with a manufacturer committed to the industry and long-term growth of our own product is brilliant.”

Scott has carefully chosen his team members for their friendly, can-do attitude and high level of commitment to quality.

“Our team is our business,” he says. “This starts with our retail staff – however, our technicians and detailers are equally important. Because our detailers and technicians care about the quality of their work, our clients have a better experience. They look at each job as if it were their own and think about how they would want their own van treated.”

With Easter coming up fast – and winter caravan travel to Australia’s north on the horizon – Scott says people should act soon if they want a new caravan as stocks are limited.

Jayco Ballarat, 217-231 Learmonth Road, Wendouree. Opens 8.30am-5.30pm weekdays and 9am-4pm Saturdays. Inquiries: 5339 3072 or visit jaycoballarat.com.au
