Thai cuisine has long been one of the most popular in the Australian foodie scene and now Pooki Porntalak and her sister Poppy are bringing their home-style cooking with authentic flavours to Melton. Pooki opened her takeaway cafe a short time ago and she’s loving seeing her customers enjoy food she grew up with.

Pooki’s cafe and store, Thai Kitchen – on Barries Road – is a simple and welcoming place, with a table and chairs for those who want to eat in, but it’s really designed for dropping in, checking out the menu and taking home a delicious, lovingly cooked meal.

Thai Kitchen is also the place to find groceries from Thailand or to grab a quick takeaway coffee.

Pooki says her menu has all the Thai favourites, freshly prepared to her own recipes using authentic ingredients.

“We have a classic papaya salad, which everyone loves for its freshness and flavours that capture all the Thai herbs and spices in one healthy dish,” Pooki says.

“And our massaman curry, always popular, is another dish full of subtle flavours.

“Our other curries come in choices of chicken, seafood and beef, with tofu and vegie options for people who want a big punch of flavour without meat.

“And, of course, we have our version of pad thai, and a selection of stir fries, fried and wok rice and noodle dishes.”

Families will love the choice of appetisers, which can make a fab meal when put together for a smorgasbord, with something for everyone. Chicken (and vegie) spring rolls, curry puffs and wings, as well as Thai calamari, fish cakes and prawn crackers are all here – and roti dipped into peanut sauce is a must-have.

Salads don’t stop at papaya. There’s larb gai, a salad of minced chicken with ground rice; grilled marinated beef; and a seafood salad – all with lemon and chilli dressing. Three types of soup are also on board.

Pooki and Poppy, both qualified chefs, are excited about their new venture.

“Most of all we love bringing our culture to people, cooking for them just as we would for our families,” Pooki says.

Right now, get a free 1.25-litre soft drink with every order over $50, and free prawn crackers and peanut sauce with $100-plus orders.
