Classes put students in a pickle

Whether you fancy pickled cabbage, a tomato and apple chutney or cured meat, Melton’s next culinary event will have you covered.

At the free presentation, dubbed Pickled, demonstrators will teach visitors how to make their own pickles, chutney, jam and cured meats while tasting goodies along the way.

Caroline Grey, from A Bit of Jam and Pickle, will talk about preserving basic foods and demonstrate a tomato and apple chutney recipe from 10-10.30am.

If sauerkraut is your thing, Solstice Nutrition’s Hannah Brantley will demonstrate how to make it and other fermented vegetables from 10.45-11.15am.

From 11.3am-noon, bacon lovers will be able to learn how to make their own at home with Chris de Bono, from Meru Food, offering a step-by-step guide and tips and tricks on curing meat.

Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said the event was a first for the municipality, and she invited everyone to come along.

“People interested in food events previously had to go into Melbourne for this kind of cultural experience,” Cr Majdlik said.

“With Pickled, we’re offering it for free to our local community.”
