It takes courage to flee persecution and seek refuge in another country, the Refugee Council of Australia reminds us.

And this year’s Refugee Week theme – with courage let us all combine – is borrowed from the Australian national anthem to celebrate the courage of refugees and call for unity.

Events will be held across the country, with Melton council, in partnership with the Melton Interfaith Network, hosting its celebration on Wednesday.

Guest speakers include author Abdi Adem [Shining: The Story of a Lucky Man], former Syrian refugee Samia Khochaba, and Iranian asylum seeker Mahshid Babzartabi, who will help shed light on issues that affect refugees and asylum seekers, while celebrating their positive contributions. There will also be cultural performances.

Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said it was important for residents to understand the experiences of refugees.

“We hope [to] help bring better understanding between members of our community, and create an environment where refugees can live in safety and make a valuable contribution to our community,” Cr Majdlik said.

The celebrations will run from noon until 1.30pm, on Wednesday, June 22 at the Melton community hall, 232 High Street.
