Lynette Miller is amazed – but not surprised – by the generosity of Melton shoppers.

Every year, Kmart launches its Wishing Trees at stores across the country – and each year, shoppers place gifts for the less fortunate under the trees.

Last year, the Melton store received a whopping 2137 gifts to be passed on to families doing it tough.

Ms Miller, who is the store’s Wishing Tree champion, said despite all the hustle and bustle of Christmas time, shoppers found the time and money to donate gifts.

“As soon as the tree appears, people seem to be placing gifts under it,” she said.

“We’re really grateful that the people of Melton are community minded. This is an area where people do struggle but they’re more than happy to give to others.”

Even though the store couldn’t reach its target of 2500 last year, Ms Miller said it was hoped 3000 gifts could be collected this year.

“Christmas is all about giving, and people usually want those who are in need to also have a happy and joyful Christmas,” she said. “We don’t want anyone to miss out.”
