Tail between Lion’s legs

Melton has suffered its second loss of the Victorian Sub-District cricket season after going down to Caulfield on Saturday.

The Lions were set 127 for victory after Caulfield won the toss and batted first in the one-day fixture. In reply, Melton was bowled out for 110 in the 43rd over.

Michael Alexander top-scored for the Lions with 32, while Jake Charge made 24.

Melton will take on top-of-the-table Ormond this week.

Meanwhile, in the Ballarat A-grade competition, Darley maintained its perfect start to the year with a nail-biting eight-run win over Wendouree.

The Lions batted first on day one of the contest, posting 7-241 from their 80 overs.

Matthew Cape starred with the bat, hitting a stunning 128 to help guide his side into a strong position.

With plenty of runs on the board, the Darley bowlers were able to attack the Wendouree top order when play resumed on Saturday.

Fresh from his century, Cape again made the early running, this time taking the first wicket to put Wendouree on the back foot at 1-12.

But the batting side wasn’t about to go down without a fight and the middle order took over, Craig Jenkins and Matt Smith both making half centuries while Gavin Webb scored 39.

When it looked like the target was about to be chased down, Darley captain-coach Heath Pritchard produced a game-changing spell of 4-43 to lead his side back into the match.

He formed a lethal duo with Cape, who took two wickets to help dismiss Wendouree for 233.

Darley now holds a 2-0 record for the season and will take on Napoleon-Sebastopol this week.
