Apple FM celebrates 30 years on local airwaves

It’s party time for the volunteers who have kept Bacchus Marsh community radio station Apple FM 98.5 on air for the past three decades.

Apple FM will host its 30th anniversary bash on October 24 at St Bernard’s Hall and wants the community to join the celebrations.

Apple FM president Mark Philip recalls the station beginning with four people who wanted to start up a community radio program.

“A temporary licence allowed them to broadcast for maybe 10 hours a week and then it led to a full licence,” he said.

Mr Philip said Apple FM’s programs focused on local people.

“We do human interest stories and volunteer groups can also use us as a medium to publicise their events. We’re not here to promote big business.”

More than 50 members and volunteers produce programs on music, culture, sport, health and wellbeing, and religion.

“We’re right behind youth in the community and we have 15-to-17-year-olds on air,” Mr Philip said. “When they finish here they don’t have any trouble communicating. We’re very youth-oriented because that’s the future of our station.

“It’s most important that we engage the community. That’s what our business is for.’’

The 30th celebrations include inaugural Pip Awards to recognise volunteers, and there will be raffles and door prizes.

Listeners will also be able to meet their favourite presenters and be entertained by Apple’s Jimmy the Reggae Man and friends.

Tickets: $30, including a two-course meal. Book at Bacchus Marsh Newsagent or online: www.ticketebo.com.au/applebash
