A CAR travelling on the Western Highway was engulfed in flames last week after debris became entangled in its engine.
The 2004 Mercedes Benz was destroyed after hay fell from a truck and moved beneath the car at Rockbank last Wednesday afternoon.
CFA station officer Michael Masters said the driver was lucky to avoid serious injury.
He said a passerby tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher but was unable to contain the flames.
Nine firefighters from Melton and Caroline Springs attended the scene, bringing the blaze under control within five minutes.
Meanwhile, an airconditioning unit at Melton’s Coburns Road Recreation Centre was extensively damaged after an electrical fault sparked a blaze last Thursday afternoon.
Station officer Jayson Hirt said it took six firefighters only about two minutes to contain the fire.
