MELTON Thoroughbreds showed no signs of rustiness after two weeks off in Big V basketball division2, winning 75-55 in Hawthorn against Maccabi at the weekend.
Coach Aaron Christian had the full squad available for the first time with Maverick Clissold returning from injury, and Prince Coleman and Jeff Crowe also available for the first time.
The team’s depth showed with six players scoring at least nine points in the game.
The first quarter began at a frantic pace with both teams finding it easy to score.
Early foul trouble for Melton’s big guys gave the bench players some quality minutes which they took advantage of, showing great defence and skilful ball movement.
The scoreboard told the story of the quarter with teams tied at 17-all.
Melton opened the second term with a zone defence to slow Maccabi’s interior presence. This proved a positive move for coach Christian with Melton nudged into a small half-time lead.
Momentum continued as Paul Ross and Clissold hit two big threes to begin the third quarter.
Melton players must have listened to the coach’s words after the main break. They caused defensive havoc, putting hands in the passing lanes to force numerous Maccabi turnovers.
Another strong contribution from the bench provided the spark for a steady 10-point lead going into the final quarter.
With Thoroughbred guards entering the key at will and the big players finishing strong around the ring, Melton continued to pile on the lead.
Maccabi gave it one last go in the dying minutes with full-court pressure, but safe in the Thoroughbred’s hands, the lead never looked in doubt and they ran away 75-55 winners.
Melton’s teamwork showed with multiple scorers, only one player registering double figures. Melton returns home this Saturday to take on the undefeated Horsham Hornets. Doors open 6.30pm for a 7pm tip-off at the Melton Indoor Recreation Centre.
