MELTON Central made it a blazing start, while Diggers Rest chalked up an important win in the opening round of Riddell District Football League at the weekend.
The Blues showed no mercy to Lancefield and won by 148 points, 27.14 (176) to 4.4 (28), in coach Brian Wheelahan’s first game in charge.
Diggers Rest may not have won by as great a margin but still kicked off the season in impressive fashion with a 12.13 (85) to 6.12 (48) win against Macedon at Tony Clarke Reserve.
Macedon kicked just two goals up until three-quarter-time before pegging back some respectability, and the margin, in the final term.
Riddell held its nerve to post a spirited seven-point win against reigning premiers Romsey at Romsey Park.
A one-goal final quarter was enough for the Bombers to prevent a Romsey comeback, winning 11.10 (76) to 9.15 (69).
