Residents
in Diggers Rest and Sunbury have formed a committee to push for an
avenue of honour established between the two suburbs.
The planned avenue of memorial trees on Vineyard Road will commemorate residents who fought or died at war.
The committee, which has about seven members, will seek the
support of VicRoads, Melton and Hume councils and state and federal
governments.

Committee member David O’Connor said the avenue would include a
mix of trees, bronze statues and a pathway along Vineyard Road. He said
the group’s chairman, Sunbury businessman Adam Mizzi, came up with the
idea more than eight years ago.
“Melton council’s chief executive has responded favourably to the
idea and subsequently offered support from the council,” Mr O’Connor
said.
“It should provide an ideal opportunity for the neighbouring
municipalities of Melton and Hume to share in a project to commemorate
our servicemen and women.”
The group plans to apply for a grant under a federal government
program marking the centenary of World War I. It will also seek the
support of local RSL branches.
