The Mail

After months of intensive “under cover” organisation, plans were announced yesterday for establishment of a major shopping centre with free parking for 1250 cars in Footscray. The development, to cost about £3 million, will establish a modern drive-in multi-business centre in the triangular block with frontages to Barkly Street, Geelong Street and Droop Street. Almost the entire block will be occupied.

The savage increases in telephone and postal charges have brought a reaction from the Labor-controlled Footscray Council. Harris successfully moved at the council meeting on Monday night that the Municipal Association of Victoria be asked to press for legislation to this effect.

Independent candidates and councillors were mauled at Williamstown’s local government polls on the weekend. Voters handed out a crushing blow to the independents – dumping three sitting councillors as Labor romped home. Sitting councillors Ian Thomas (North Ward), Graham Maquire and Fred Thomas (South Ward) now find themselves sidelined after being unceremoniously dumped at the polls.

Altona-Laverton Mail

August 2, 1995

Residents Protecting the West, which is leading opposition to the State Government plan to build a prison at Laverton North, has hit out at claims by Premier Jeff Kennett that it is merely a “front” for the Labor Party. But group spokesperson Naomi Davidson said the organisation’s sole aim was to ensure the western suburbs were given reasonable treatment. She said its membership included people from different political parties drawn together to try to block the prison.
