More room to reel

Melton’s fishermen have more to look forward to as recreational fishing access to Navan Park in Melton is set to improve, with Melton’s council securing $70,000 to install a second fishing landing at the popular local spot.

The funding forms part of grants awarded to 20 projects statewide through the state government’s Recreational Fishing Grants Program, announced last week by Outdoor Recreation Minister Steve Dimopoulos.

The new landing is expected to enhance access for anglers of all ages and abilities, helping locals make better use of Navan Park Lake and encouraging more people to take part in recreational fishing close to home.

Mr Dimopoulos said the grants were about getting Victorians outdoors and strengthening community connections.

“These grants will improve facilities encouraging more Victorians to fish more often,” he said.

“Fishing is a fun and cost-effective activity that helps get people outdoors and helps to build stronger connections in the community.”

The upgrades form part of projects occurring statewide in a bid to get people outdoors and improve fishing for those with a lifelong passion as well as beginners just getting into it.

The Barwon River in Geelong has received two new fishing platforms, while Lauriston Reservoir near Kyneton also received a new platform.

Funding was also put towards boosting native fish habitats in East Gippsland estuaries.
