Refugee Week film screening

Celebrating Refugee Week, Melton Library will host a special film screening with the Aspiring Young Africans Foundation (ASPYA).

The documentary Reclaimed Voices, produced by the Melton-based ASPYA foundation last year, will be screened from 5.30pm at the Melton Library and Learning Hub on Thursday, June 12.

The documentary follows the transformative journey of Sabir Banek, a young man with lived experience of the youth justice system.

Mr Banek’s story is one of profound change – finding employment, embracing his faith, and redefining his future.

Challenging the often negative media portrayal of the South Sudanese community, the documentary aims to inspire by showcasing real-life examples of loss, redemption and positive change

This unmissable event will feature a screening of the documentary, followed by a panel discussion with Mr Banek and ASPYA Foundation co-founder Robiel Abraham.

They will share their insights on the making of the documentary and answer any questions.

ASPYA Foundation is a not-for-profit youth-led organisation based in Melton.

Their mission is to reconnect African youth with their communities and empower them to be positive contributors to society.

Refugee Week is an annual event that aims to raise awareness of the challenges facing refugees, and the contributions they make to the community.

Attendance is free and bookings can be made on Melton’s website, in-person at one of the council’s libraries, by email, or over the phone.
